The Bulgarian Labour Code has been updated with new provisions governing remote work arrangements. These changes affect both employers and employees and require immediate attention from HR departments across the country.
New Obligations for Employers
- Written remote work policies must be adopted by all companies with 10+ employees
- Equipment provision and maintenance obligations are now codified
- Right to disconnect provisions apply outside working hours
- Workplace safety inspections can now cover home offices
Employee Rights
Employees working remotely are entitled to the same benefits and protections as on-site workers, including equal pay, career development opportunities, and social insurance coverage. The new framework also establishes a “right to request” remote work, which employers must consider in good faith.
Compliance Timeline
Companies have until June 30, 2026 to align their internal policies with the new requirements. Our Employment practice can assist with policy drafting, compliance reviews, and employee communication strategies.
